Digital Identity for 2M+ Louisiana Residents
Problem
Before LA Wallet existed, every state-issued credential in Louisiana was purely physical: driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, Real ID, Medicaid cards, hunting and fishing permits, vaccine cards, and concealed carry licenses. These cards were easy to lose, time-consuming to replace, and difficult to manage when residents needed to verify their identity quickly for law enforcement, TSA, bars, casinos, or government services. The state also faced a growing problem with fake IDs. Visual checks alone were not reliable, and there was no real-time method to authenticate an ID against the state database. Louisiana needed a secure, mobile-first identity platform that unified all credentials, reduced fraud, and made verification effortless for both residents and authorities.
Solution
I helped design LA Wallet from the ground up as the nation’s first approved digital driver’s license app, creating a single secure mobile wallet for every major state-issued credential. The experience centered around a real-world wallet interaction model, improved add license and replacement flows, and secure verification tools for both residents and authorities.
Key Solutions I Designed:
A real-world wallet interface where all cards stack vertically and expand when selected for quick access
Redesigned license and permit onboarding flows to simplify adding and replacing credentials
VerifyYou, which displays the user photo above an animated QR code that refreshes every second for real-time authentication
Scan Mode, a dedicated interface for police, TSA, bars, casinos, and venues to instantly verify identity through quick QR scans
A unified experience that supports all major Louisiana-issued credentials
Supported Credentials:
• Driver’s License and Real ID
• Vehicle Registration
• Vaccine Cards
• Medicaid Health Plan Cards
• Concealed Carry Permits
• Hunting and Fishing Licenses
• Additional state-issued documents
My Role
As one of the first Principal Designers on LA Wallet, I shaped the foundation of the product and its visual and interaction language from day one. I led the UX and UI design across the entire app, created the full design system, developed the branding and iconography, and defined the navigation model that unified all credentials into a single wallet experience. I mapped and redesigned the end-to-end flows for adding, managing, and replacing credentials, and I designed the VerifyYou and Scan features that became essential to secure identity verification statewide. My work was highly collaborative, partnering directly with state government agencies, legal and compliance teams, developers at Envoc, product managers, and law enforcement and TSA personnel to ensure the app met strict security requirements while remaining intuitive for everyday residents.
